Gas line explosion in Fresno Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Gas line explosion in Fresno - Essay Example During the explosion, at least 11 people were injured. Most of the victims were inmates who were near the blast site. In this case, the inmates had been assigned cleaning and maintenance duties at the firing range (Marcum & Therolf, 2015). However, three other inmates were unhurt. Firefighters assigned to put out the explosion revealed that, the blaze blackened front loader and formed a crater at the site. The explosion however did not create property damage in the area. Although there were no indications that the PG&E Company had a hand in the fiery accident, the Fresno County Sheriffs are investigating the companyââ¬â¢s natural-gas operations. Extensive scrutiny is conducted due to the companyââ¬â¢s natural-gas operations that killed at least 8 people after the San Francisco blast in San Bruno suburb (Marcum & Therolf, 2015). On the other hand, the National Transportation Safety Board is blaming PG&E safety practices and Iax lapse by state regulators especially for this occurrence. The State regulators had earlier leveled the biggest-ever fine against utility in the state to cost at least $1.6 billion. This was against PG&E for its role in the Bruno blast (Marcum & Therolf, 2015). Catastrophic pipeline emergencies remain rare. However, with the increasing pipeline catastrophes across the United States, adequate preparation and responses remain important in minimizing life and property risks from pipeline emergencies. To plan effectively for pipeline catastrophes, it is important that emergency responders understand how best the emergency response works. Additionally, the authorities in charge must use resources and tools available in assisting with disaster preparedness and response. Excavators and pipeline organizations must always coordinate before digging. Communities must also consider implementing some of the recommended practices by the PIPA. Most of these recommendations address on people and property protection. They also

Teen oriented dating reality shows are undermining the values of our Essay
Teen oriented dating reality shows are undermining the values of our youth - Essay Example Scholars and experts have engaged in thought-provoking debate on the impacts of the reality television programming on the society, with majority perceiving it have negative influence especially on the youth. With emphasis on teen-oriented dating reality shows, this paper seeks to differ with the assumption that these reality shows undermine the values of the youth in society (Bilandzic and Rossler 296). For the purpose of this paper, The Bachelor and The Bachelorette dating reality shows will be the primary example throughout the paper. Contrary to these assumptions, the paper reiterates that dating reality shows actually demonstrate a number of beneficial values to individuals, especially the youth. According to some portion of scholars, claiming that a television show has negative or positive influence over reality is to forgo the x factor. This has nothing to do with the show. The main contributing factor to such perception is what the viewer takes from an experience, similar to the interpretation of the Christian Bible. The presentations may largely vary, but the results will be the same: people will hear what their conscience wants to hear, and proceed to apply those experiences in their lives in ways that benefits them personally. However, this does not make the particular thing good or bad. If our judgment no everything based on their effects on people, then most of what we consider sacred and moral would be bad since religious fervor is the cause of many battles in the past. Just like people, the media can have both positive and negative impacts on the society at the same time. Indeed, the presentation may have some bias on one direction or the other, but the most import ant determinant is the individual doing the viewing (Reiss and Wiltz 364). It is thus important to look and evaluate the types of people watching a particular program before pointing fingers in any directions. In

Title VII in the Workplace Essay Example for Free
Title VII in the Workplace Essay History and evolution. Many employees can face discrimination or sexual harassment claims nowadays. Even in the US Congress, such cases are reported frequently. It is very difficult for the managers of companies to deal with this kind of problems because they can cost large sums of money to the company. For example, TX Bar Journal estimated that the average large corporation pays approximately $6.7 million to investigate, defend, and either settle or pay judgments for sexual harassment claims. Therefore, it has become very important for companies, especially nowadays, to pay lots of attention to legislation regulating discrimination in the workplace. It is much cheaper for the company to make studies of the necessary laws and make sure human resources management always takes into consideration everything marked in those acts than suffer losses from claims. Even though it is impossible to take into consideration every single aspect marked in the legislation, most of them can be followed without any difficulties. All of the people working and living in the United States want to have equal abilities for working and developing their career and building their happy future. If in the beginning of the century discrimination could be not punished, at present people believe in the ideals of democracy and fight for their rights because they want to have a prosperous future. People of different religions and outlooks live and work in the US and it is very important for companies to ensure equal conditions for them in the workplace. Title VII is one of the most important laws regulating the mentioned problems. Title VII coverage. Title VII is one of the most general laws which protects individuals from job discrimination in different fields, while all other laws regulating job discrimination sphere focus on issues which were not completely covered in the Title VII or which need some special description. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act was adopted in 1964 which makes it the oldest law in the list of laws regulating discrimination in the workplace and which therefore means that it is a basic law in the field. Title VII covers all of the private employers, state and local governments, and education institutions that employ 15 or more individuals, private and public employment agencies, labor organizations, and joint labor management committees controlling apprenticeship and training. General characteristics, policies, and impact. According to Title VII, it is considered illegal to discriminate in the following aspects of employment, such as: hiring and firing; compensation, assignment, or classification of employees; transfer, promotion, layoff, or recall; job advertisements; recruitment; testing; use of company facilities; training and apprenticeship programs; fringe benefits; pay, retirement plans, and disability leave; or other terms and conditions of employment. The mentioned aspects are the most important in the field because they cover all the general areas of discrimination where an individual can be denied his rights. There are also some other aspects which Title VII also prohibits, for example harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or age; retaliation against an individual for filing a charge of discrimination, participating in an investigation, or opposing discriminatory practices. The act prohibits employment decisions based on stereotypes or assumptions about the abilities, traits, or performance of individuals of a certain sex, race, age, religion, or ethnic group, or individuals with disabilities; and denying employment opportunities to a person because of marriage to, or association with, an individual of a particular race, religion, national origin, or an individual with a disability. It is considered an unlawful employment practice for an employer to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, or privileges of employment, because of such individuals race, religion, sex, or origin. Title VII also prohibits discrimination because of participation in schools or places of worship associated with a particular racial or religious group. Title VII prohibits not only intentional discrimination, but also practices that have the effect of discriminating against individuals because of their race, color, national origin. For example, at some jobs employers might want to require their employees to conduct their work only in English and therefore they have to speak English fluently, or otherwise they will not be employed. According to Title VII, this is going to be considered discrimination unless the employer can prove that without this knowledge, the employee will be unable to conduct any work in the particular job for which he is applying. Oftentimes people cannot get a particular job not because of their disability to work in this position but because some member of the family is of a certain race which is considered unacceptable by the employer, or because of religion which appears unacceptable to the employer, or because the individual is disabled, or because he does not speak English. Without any legislation prohibiting those practices, employees could never be protected against those practices and would have to suffer from discrimination which becomes very common in such multinational society as American Society. That is why human resources management in the companies should always be knowledgeable in all the aspects which Title VII and all other discrimination prohibiting legislation cover and make sure they avoid all the practices which may discriminate against certain employees or job applicants. Human Resource (HRM) Planning in Health Organization
Human Resource (HRM) Planning in Health Organization Strategic Human Resource Management Business Growth The factor of Human Resource Planning in Health Organization is this factor describes the basic service that is provided by health resources department to the operating system of the organization to the health sector human resource management will have a difference in business become without the conviction of human resource management it will not make a difference. By the influence of business human resource planning in healthcare organization people can be motivated to drive the human resource management the business growth performance level, it can build the employee commitment by using the human resource practices. Human resource practices have 3 major in general, these three are (1) They have to build some new capabilities of the organization critically (2) The satisfaction of the employee have to be enhance (3) The shareholder and costumer mainly have to improve the satisfaction. Decline Human Resource Management in healthcare in decline is they must engaged a core group strategies, strategies that will enhance the human resource, to do this is the human resource management must raise their profile issue base on the conceptual and must improve and also the decision makers must be statistically available as evidence. Human Resource Management in healthcare through the global human resources crisis the community will be the one to respond t the growing health crises in developing countries, which will trigger the responds to focused on the mobilizing of the financial status of the resources and the increased access to all essential medicine, however the most important in the healthcare system is the people that will make them work which is the most important aspect and later on it will be tackled. The human resource for health personnel will be the one responsible to deliver in health publicity not only clinically but also the environmental services are decline and des troy much for developing. However the mobility demand and the issues of supply are central to human resource problem, namely local transnational and regional. Human Resource Management Health workforce, change, competition/challenge The healthcare delivery system is a very highly labour intensive, in so far for the health worker performance or the most function of mediate health system are very central for the health system of human resources to be more continuously more effective, the healthcare system of human resource must have a mixed Healthcare worker and a right number of healthcare worker and also they have to be ensure they possess the skilful worker and also they have to be ensure that they possess the skilful worker in order to perform the function very well of what he has assigned to do for, and have the means of motivation. There are three dimension where the Human Resource management are involved, because of the many countries now are facing the crisis. These dimensions are: Performance ââ¬â this is the care with quality that a health workers can provide which will relate to the health workers productivity Distribution ââ¬â this is where the presence of a health worker is most needed which relate to the retirement and recruitment. Availability ââ¬â this is only relates to the qualified health worker which are supplied. Labour Market competition and employee development. First letââ¬â¢s define what a labour market is, what is a market and what is labour. Well a market let say is a kind of structure where the sellers and buyers are allowed to exchange goods, information or services of any type. While on the other hand labour market is a kind of structure where they allow the labour services to be bought and sold. For the labour market for the combination between labour and market are also in different terms, specifically labour market are those employ staff who seek to employ are called buyers and for those who are seeking for employment are the ones called the sellers. The well-functioning of a labour market in compensation or wages ââ¬â it can be understand by a overall return for an employment particularly not only in the financial component but this is also will act as the mechanism to what the buyers intension and the seizures will be reconciled. Tends to be the demands and also the supply of labour are towards to the equilibrium. They are said to be clear, that is labour market only when the supply of the labour will matched to demand to the workers. However being clear to the labour market are not always in the way. If they are going to fail to do so. They will going to exhibit either or neither employments or labour surplus. The system will very dynamic when it becomes to health labour system it compromise two distinct but its closely related to the economic forces for such workers and for the demand of the supply health workers. In the tradition the human resource management analysis for supply crisis have been only framed to receive scant attention with the demand side factors. Human Resource Management planning in a healthcare organisation Identifying internal personnel requirements , internal and external factors in matching personnel to organisational requirements; government policies and labour market competition. In my research the human resource business management in healthcare founded to be divided in three cluster these are (1) internally operating measures (2) internally have the strategic plan measures (3) externally operating measures these three cluster are said to be to help the function of the human resource management and drives the business contribution in better view. For the cluster one which is the internally operating measures is that this cluster is emphasis more on the traditional way of human resource management measure for because human resource function here and the human resource professionals are held for their accountable, they more focus on the quality, efficiency and the speed of the delivering process of human resource practices and the human resource management will function as a whole, while the cluster two the internally strategic measures human resource in the way of how they build the organization capabilities and enhancement of employee satisfaction and last ly the third cluster is the external strategic measures this are cluster will be assessing the external strategic measures this cluster will be assessing the effectiveness of the human resource management practices on how the shareholder and customers are satisfied, the purpose of this is to drive the shareholder and the customers satisfaction. The health labour better policies and market analysis comparatively in a study implications of government in the Dominican republic are analytically analyse the wage bills policies for the workforce of the healthcare, There are four countries who are implementing the general government wage bills policies restriction, these countries are Dominican republic, Zambia and Rwanda and they also study the purpose of those policies and the effects on the strategy of human resource management for expanding or maintaining the workforce. The demand health for the workers for the country are determine by the government, private sector and multinational sector corporations and donors are willing to pay them just to hire them. Walmart :: essays research papers
http://laplaza.org/~totem/econ.html Retail Business, Jobs, Taxes and Prices in Taos Support your friends and neighbors and local businesses. Say NO to an SS Wal-Mart! Since Wal-Mart came to Taos, the number of retail businesses decreased from 438 to 231. In the last five years alone, retail jobs decreased from 3156 to 1500. (US census, pub 1/2003) Those closed businesses and the lost jobs supported community members, their children, their employees, and the stores in which they shopped. More local businesses will close after a Wal-Mart superstore comes to town. If businesses close at the same rate, Taos will lose 47% of its current retail stores and 54.5% of its retail jobs in a few years. What do we tell the families who have lost businesses or jobs that pay a living wage? Will as many tourists visit when we have fewer restaurants and shops because Taoseos can't afford to support them during the year? Can local banks stay open with fewer local business and worker deposits and when Wal-Mart deposits its money at night and withdraws it in the morning? How long will Wal-Mart remain profitable and open when fewer people have money to spend? Gross Receipts Taxes In 1998 Wal-Mart accounted for only 4.6% of the total taxes due Taos from all industries. (NM Taxation & Revenue Dept. and Wal-Mart) Do we change our land use code because Wal-Mart wants to blanket the country? What do we say to the hundreds of people who worked three years to produce Vision 20/20 and our land use code? Do we change our code that would support a local economy of thriving tourist and local-serving businesses, cottage industries and home businesses, agriculture and small sustainable industries that do not negatively impact the environment? What do we leave for our children and grandchildren? Food Prices Wal-Mart tells shoppers that they have low prices. However, a comparison of prices between the Taos food stores and the Wal-Mart superstore in Espanola shows:

Muhammad Ali - The Greatest :: Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr
In the summer of 1960, a young man stood on a podium wearing a gold medal around his neck, while the ââ¬Å"Star Spangled Bannerâ⬠played. A champion stood, not knowing the nationââ¬â¢s view on athletes forever. It was the first glimpse for the man who would come to be known as the greatest. à à à à à Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 17, 1942. Young Clay found boxing in 1954 after his bike was stolen at the Louisville Home Show. He reported the theft to local police officer, Joe Martin, and told him he would beat up whoever stole the bike. Martin laughed at the idea of such a small boy beating someone up, so he decided to train Clay. Martin, who also taught boxing to local youth at the Columbia Gym, taught the 89-pound Clay how to box during his teenage years. From that day on, Clay would show up every day at the gym like clockwork working on his skills. à à à à à By 1958, Clay had dropped out of high school with several amateur boxing titles, and by 1960, he was preparing to compete in the Olympics. In the gold-medal match for the light-heavyweight division, Clay faced Polish southpaw Zbigniew Pietrzykowski, and won the gold in three rounds. After the Olympics, Clay received a contract from the Louisville Sponsoring Group for $333 a month, plus a $10,000 signing bonus. à à à à à With no more money problems to worry about, Clay had more time to consider what was going on in the world around him. He paid heavy attention to the Civil Rights Movement and he wanted to be part of it. But it was very difficult for a young black man to be heard in the early 1960ââ¬â¢s. The only group giving a voice to the ââ¬Å"common manâ⬠was the Nation of Islam. In 1962, Clay drove to Detroit to hear the Nation of Islamââ¬â¢s leader, the honorable Elijah Muhammad, speak. He also met someone who would greatly influence his life, a man named Malcolm X. à à à à à Clay studied Xââ¬â¢s teachings of Islam, but more so, Clay agreed with Xââ¬â¢s view on how blacks were treated in the United States. Both Clay and X believed in complete in total segregation between blacks and whites living in America. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m no troublemaker. I donââ¬â¢t believe in forced integration. I know where I belong. Iââ¬â¢m not going to force myself into anybodyââ¬â¢s house.â⬠Clay also advocated Xââ¬â¢s criticism on the non-violent movement in the southern states.
Reform movements of 1820-1860 in the United States Essay
2. How were the reform movements of 1820-1860 in the United States related to the growth of industry and urban life? During the years 1820-1860, America has received a wave of social reformation movements that were in correlation with the growth of industry and urban life. This time period, also known as the antebellum era (time period before the Civil War) brought movements such as: the temperance movement (1826-1840ââ¬â¢s), the movement for public asylums (1820ââ¬â¢s and 1830ââ¬â¢s), the public education movement/reform (1820-1860), the womenââ¬â¢s rights movement (1850ââ¬â¢s) and the anti-slavery movement. All of these movements were in sync with to the growth of industry and urban life. The temperance movement arose because of the urban life people faced in the city (alcoholics); the movement for public asylums arose because of the countless of people that had disabilities and the number of homeless people in urban areas; the womenââ¬â¢s rights movement arose because of the way men treated women in both industry and urban life; and the anti-slavery movement arose because of th e way industry was treating them (such as too much work and no pay). The temperance movement (1826) and the movement for public asylums (1820ââ¬â¢s and 1830ââ¬â¢s) both arose due to the conditions the people of the urban life were facing. The temperance movement arose because there were too many people drinking liquor excessively after working hours, and strengthened after the Irish immigrated to America during the 1830ââ¬â¢s (since many people stereotyped the Irish as excessive drinkers, the temperance movement was mostly aimed towards them). Many of the people that drank liquor claimed that it relieved their stress from working too much in the factories. However, once those people got home, they caused family problems, and sometimes cause crimes. This urban problem was a big dilemma, so people organized themselves and formed a temperance movement to ask for the pledge of people to stay abstinent. Another movement that arose due to urban problems was the amount of people that were homeless and the ones that hadà disabilities. Throughout 1820-1840, urban life was full of crime because of the number of homeless people that robbed others. There was also a big number of homeless people living on the streets because the city could did not have enough apartments to allow people in. The number of people that had disabilities also caused a problem in urban life because they had a hard time struggling to survive. That is why people formed the Asylum movement. This movement called for the building of shelters for the homeless, schools for the disabled people and medical centers for them. This movement helped improve urban life to become a more tranquil place. The womenââ¬â¢s rights movement arose due to the way they were treated by men. However, the womenââ¬â¢s rights movement didnââ¬â¢t begin with the snap of a finger. Since many women were busy taking care of the house and their children, they didnââ¬â¢t have time to involve themselves in movements to support their rights. However, when the Industrial Revolution came to America, men left home to work for salaries, which meant they had less time to spend with their wife. With the addition of birth control, women had fewer children, which meant that they had time for social reform. After entering this ââ¬Å"phaseâ⬠women came to a realization that they resented the way men neglected them to secondary roles (which was to take care of the house and children) in the movement and preventing them from taking part of anything that had to do with politics. This sort of thinking can be classified as an urban way of thinking because in an everyday urban day, the mother would stay at home while the father would go work to get his salary. Although women fought for their rights during the 1850ââ¬â¢s, their movement was obscured by the anti-slavery movement. This movement arose because the industry of America was treating them bad. In the South, many slaves were put into hard labor because around the 1820ââ¬â¢s to 1830ââ¬â¢s, there was a very high demand for people wanting cotton. The anti-slavery movement was supported by the Second Great Awakening (a time period in America in which religious enlightenment flourished). The Second Great Awakening brought over that slavery was a sin, and since many people were very religious, they didnââ¬â¢t like the fact that they were sinners (urban life ideals). The anti-slavery movement also brought abolitionists together to fight for theirà cause and it also brought abolitionist newspapers such as _The Liberator_. Many people also didnââ¬â¢t like the fact that slaves were seen as business (industry), which gave them another reason to form the movement. The antebellum era brought many social reforms to America, and they were all in relation to the way the industry was growing and the way people lived in urban life. The temperance movement was in response to the crimes and the alcoholics that arose during the 1830ââ¬â¢s; the movement for public asylums arose because of the number of needy people that were homeless and disabled; the womenââ¬â¢s rights movement arose due to the way they were treated by men in their urban life and the growth of industry; and the anti-slavery movement was in response to the unfair treatment of slaves, the idea that slavery was a sin, and the fact that slaves were seen as a market. All these reforms arose because the people were reacting to the things that were happening to urban life and the growth of industry, and in my opinion, I think all these reforms were made for the best of mankind because they led to a safer and secure life.
